NYC back to business after Irene, Vermont flooded - Brantford ...
NEW YORK - New York was back to business Monday after Hurricane Irene, but hundreds of thousands of people who normally travel from the surrounding area face a difficult trip, such as floods eliminated certain transit routes.
Further north, Vermont was facing the worst flooding in the state since 1927, after Irene swept like a tropical storm Sunday night. He poured huge amounts of rain in New Jersey and other states on its way to Canada.
The storm killed at least 21 people in the United States and cut power 5 million homes and businesses.
Financial markets were normal opening, although the volume should be reduced. Federal courts in New York were also due to be opened.
New York subway and air travel at major airports slowly began to return to duty, but the commuter rail supply of the city from the north and New Jersey have been indefinitely in the grip of debris on the tracks and stagnant water.
On Sunday the doors of the New York Stock Exchange had been coated with sand bags and tarps in anticipation of a flood, but they were were nowhere to be seen on Monday morning.
Paul Orlando, 45, who works in a private bank, stayed out two blocks from Wall Street, smoking a cigarette and began to laugh in anticipation of a shuttle difficult, he got to work two hours earlier his home in the borough of Queens.
"The MTA (Metropolitan Transit Authority) site had a history, news and other hotlines yet another," Orlando said. "I took the train. He was very smooth. There were no problems.
"I will take a lot of work today, I guess. I get an A for effort."
Peter Rugen, 45, a banker who commutes to work normally from his home in Manhattan to Stamford, Conn., was frustrated to hear a clerk in Grand Central would not train on Monday. "I'll probably just pay a lot of money for a taxi to take me there," he said, adding that it would cost about $ 120, compared to the rate of $ 12.25 on the train.
