For nearly the last four years, children from both towns in kindergarten through second grade have attended Bethlehem Elementary School and children in grades three through five have been at Mitchell Elementary School in Woodbury. This regionalization was implemented for the 2007-08 school year and approved by board mem­bers in October 2006. A Camp Jewell minivan was involved in a fatal accident in Farmington, Maine on August 17. The van was transporting four campers and two staff members when a tractor-trailer rolled onto the van. Tess Meisel, 12, of Westport, was killed in the accident, while two other campers were treated and released at a local hospital. The YMCA is working with local investigators to determine the cause of the accident. In 2009, the Mountaineers struggled to a 1-9 record. In 2010, Housy rebounded behind its seniors — led by Tanner Brissett and Mike Kenney — and a solid core of sophomores and juniors to finish the year 5-5. Housy picked up a pair of wins over Stafford/East Windsor and Granby Memorial to improve to 5-4 before a loss in the Berkshire Bowl to rival Gilbert/Northwestern dropped them to .500. Housy played tough throughout the game before the Yellowjackets pulled away. During a joint meeting of the Litchfield Hills Council of Elected Officials (LHCEO) and the Northwestern Connecticut Council of Governments (NWCCOG), municipal leaders Tuesday discussed their intentions of maintaining a level of cooperation among themselves should the state’s Office of Policy Management “force” the organizations to merge. The Region 10 school district is one of six districts to sue the state Department of Education over tuition for part-time pre-kindergarten schools. Parents and the state had previously covered the tuition for such problems, but a new regulation places this responsibility on school districts.

The ski resort with the top average score (on a scale of 1 to 5) in each category, and a minimum number of entries, receives the award. Visitors then ranked them in five categories: Overall Favorite, Best Nightlife, Most Family-Friendly, Best Downhill Terrain, and Best Terrain Park.

"User-generated content is a very powerful and effective way Web visitors have to communicate with each other," said Mountain News Global Managing Director Chad Dyer. "Skiers and snowboarders are relying on the word of their peers when they make resort choices."

Here are just a few samples of what OTS visitors wrote about Canaan Valley: "Once again this little gem of a resort delivered more than we expected. You can't go wrong with this gem. Loved it!" Another visitor wrote: "The whole experience was a lot of fun from the unexpected great conditions to the lack of any wait at the lifts or anywhere else (e.g., lunch, rentals, parking, etc.). Canaan is a true getaway."

Still another said: "It's not too busy and the lift lines are very short. Big bang for your buck. This, by far, is a great place to get away and ski. I love the fact that it is still a secret to most and the lifts and slopes feel like they're never full."

The mountain at Canaan Valley Resort overlooks the southern Canaan Valley, the upland vale shared with Timberline Ski Resort. Cabins and condos are located throughout. Dozens of specialty shops and gourmet restaurants supplement the skiing and snowboarding. There are 91 acres of skiable terrain, serviced by four lifts.
