SkyWest plans to layoff 170 workers in SLC

ST. GEORGE - SkyWest Airlines announced Thursday it would lay off 170 Northern Utah workers after partner Delta Air Lines unveiled plans to reduce Salt Lake City flights by 14 percent.
Marissa Snow, spokeswoman for St. George-based SkyWest Airlines, said the move would have no impact on Southern Utah. Jobs and air service, she added, would not change for St. George or Cedar City.
"It's specific just to Salt Lake," she said.
The airlines cited passenger reductions and rising fuel prices as the driving force behind the decision.
The layoffs will take place Sept. 22 and affect gate agents and baggage handlers at Salt Lake City International Airport. SkyWest employs more than 2,500 people at the airport.
