One more chance to cheer....

I 'm probably not going to make a lot of friends when I say that I am glad that summer is almost over. I've never been one to define the passing of a year as the twelve months that begin with January and end in December; September to August is what I consider a 'calendar year'.

There's nothing that stirs my soul more than a great Back-to- School flyer or seeing my very favourite commercial of all time starting up again on television. You know the one I'm talking about: The father dancing through the aisles of a popular Office Supply store to the strains of 'It's The Most Wonderful Time of the Year', while his kids follow him looking like someone just told them 'the truth' about the man in red. I get the urge to run out and buy a pack of crayons, some HB pencils and one of those bottles of glue with the red rubber dabber that we ended up chewing or breaking off by the end of the first week of school every time I see that ad. I LOVE that commercial. Love. It.

That being said, I do not love the new and updated version of it. I say if it ain't broke, don't fix it. Watching a young woman gliding through the store while a group of polished store employees shuffle and two-step along behind her in perfect formation just doesn't do it for me the way the old commercial did. While the father skipping with joyful abandonment made me smile, the dancing flash mob in red actually makes me want to avoid the store altogether. If my grandmother were still alive, I know exactly what she would say every time that commercial would appear on her television: "Moses! Who wants to walk around a store being afraid they're going to get trampled by a chorus line?!" Yep, my grandma told it like it was...

All kidding aside, I love this time of year. The end of August means I get to go back to sleeping under an open bedroom window, with the cool night air blowing gently through the screen. It means I don't feel like passing out from the heat and humidity after only working an hour or two out in the yard. The end of August brings end-of- season clearance sales in the stores, back-to-school shopping for the kids and the realization that all those fabulous fall fairs are just around the corner.
