When it comes to dogs, who are the real masters?

Let's see some hands. Do you own dogs? Looks like about 40 percent raised your hand. I own two. Or should I say, two own me.

They don't work. I pay all their bills and buy their food. I make sure they have fresh water every day. When it rains, they are always in the house. One of them is always on my side of the bed at night if I don't get there first. That doesn't bother me too much. I just have to turn the pillow over so I don't sleep where they have drooled. Of course, I have to remember to turn the pillow over again in the morning to have a dry side the following night.

They go to the vet more than I go to the doctor. They never drive when they go "bye bye." If aliens from another planet were to watch us following our dogs with "do-do" bags, we would be hard pressed to make them believe we were the masters.

So why do we love them? Who greets you at the door after a grueling day at work? Who never talks back to you when you are wrong? Who loves you even if you yell at them? No, I mean besides your better half.

It is that furry ball of happiness, the dog. Man's best friend - at least it is unless he/she isn't chewing up one of your prized possessions.

That leads me to another thought. Why, after all they do for us, do people think leaving dogs in the back of trucks, with no protection, is OK? I observed a dog in the back of a work truck that was dancing back and forth from the metal truck bed to the metal tool box, to the metal truck roof, trying to find a cool place for his feet. He definitely looked in pain. Don't people realize that pads on the dog's feet can get burned? A good test for these inconsiderate humans would be to make them stand barefooted on hot metal to see how that same condition affects animals. Driving does not cool the metal in a hot sun.

That breach of intelligence is on an equal par with owners letting their dogs ride on the top of hay bale-carrying trucks. They should ask themselves if they had ever stumbled just walking, for no reason. I don't believe anyone can say no to that question. Do these people think dog feet are magically attached to the hay? Drivers following are probably paying more attention to the dog instead of their driving. Might not this be a driving hazard?
