Burke School Board To Seek Interim Superintendent

MORGANTON, N.C. -- The Burke County Board of Education on Monday will have its first meeting since deciding to buy out past Superintendent Art Stellar’s contract.

The school board appointed former Draughn High School principal Larry Putnam as acting superintendent.

Next, it will seek an interim superintendent.

August’s regular board meeting will start at 6 p.m. in the West Concord Resource Center, 509 W. Concord St.

Board Chair Catherine Thomas said in an interview last week that she does not believe the board will start the search for a permanent superintendent before new board members are seated in December.

However, the search will begin soon for an interim superintendent to lead Burke County Public Schools through much of the coming year.

Thomas expressed her confidence in Putnam’s ability to serve as acting superintendent. However, she pointed out, the former elementary and high school principal has the required credentials for the position, but he has no on-the-job experience as a superintendent.

“We need an experienced superintendent,” she said, “to calm the waters and stabilize the system.”

Because the search for a permanent superintendent can require six months or more, school systems routinely hire interim executives. There are a number of potential candidates who typically are recently retired school superintendents and associate superintendents. For example, Dr. Sharron Crawford, retired superintendent of McDowell County Public Schools, recently served as interim superintendent in Avery County.

Thomas said board members may propose some names and school attorney Chris Campbell also will prepare a list of possible candidates.

Thomas also plans to suggest that the interim superintendent retain Putnam in the role of assistant or associate superintendent.

So the time has finally come. High school is where you start to realize your dreams and goals in life, where you make friends and have fun. Hard work does pay off and helps to make your future planning easier, such as college and etc. I do love high school, but I believe I am ready to begin the next stages of my life. I may act tough now but I know I'll go and cry myself to sleep later about how much I'm going to miss my high school years. The only thing I don't miss is getting up early, that was a pain! I really hope every one of my fellow classmates do well and progress in their future goals. I'd love to meet with them again in the near future. There's nothing worse then seeing someone with low self esteem. Sometimes I want to be there for them and I want to stand up for them, but hypocritically speaking I am in the same state. Although the times have bettered themselves compared to back then, I still feel the need to change. There's nothing wrong with changing to better yourself. One day I will be able to do all that I want and more. I want to show people that they are beautiful, I want to give hope and open their eyes. One day.
