Dragon Boat World Championships
In the week before leaving for the World Dragon Boat Racing Championships in Tampa, people kept asking if I was excited, or nervous. Well, the truth is that apart from a little excitement about travelling to somewhere new, I didn’t feel nervous at all. But I knew that would change as the race days approached.
After a very early start, two flights and a lot of time hanging around airports, arriving in Tampa made it all very real, and the heat that hit us the minute we stepped out of the cavernous cool of the airport building really hammered it home. This summer, the UK has rarely seen temperatures over 20 degrees Celsius (at least where I live), but Tampa has been hovering at around 35 degrees. Throw in a helping of stifling humidity and suddenly it all adds up to a bit of a shock to the system.
Arriving at the hotel to meet up with the rest of the team and the excitement went up another notch. The GB women had chosen to stay at the Marriott Waterside, right next to the racecourse, which proved to be a good move. There were plenty of restaurants just a short walk away – and believe me, even a short walk was more than enough while we were still acclimatizing.
Normally the pre-event days are spent trying to stay safe and calm. In fact, for weeks before, team members question everything they do. There’s not much that can make the boat go faster, but a host of things that can make it go a whole lot slower. Even I had to turn down a windsurfing lesson and the chance to take a Rib across the Irish Sea as both were deemed to be likely to cause an injury and we weren’t taking any reserves this time. Likewise you have to be careful what you put on and in your body as there’s always a chance you’ll be selected for random drug testing and ‘I didn’t know’ is no defence. A positive test, however innocent, affects the whole team.
As the helm (also known as sweep or steersperson), my job is a bit different. For one, the fitness requirements are not so specific as for a paddler. Although I had spoken to my physio and developed a series of weights all carried out in the crouched posture that I use on the back of the boat. Instead selection is based on your skill and experience in handling a twitchy 40-foot boat, weighing the best part of a ton while travelling at around 4 metres per second. Unflappable, great balance, calm in a crisis and possessor of a great set of lungs all also apply. But that still didn’t excuse me from the team run on the first morning. Now I have to say that I’m built for comfort, not speed, and running is not my forte. But it was important to exercise to help acclimatization and getting over jet lag, so run I did! And to say we sweated doesn’t even come near!
