Farmington Hills Spa Owner Believes in Power of Massage Therapy

The Pesta family is pictured in Florida in 2009, while Jacob was still undergoing treatment; from left, Jacob Pesta, now 7, Michael Pesta, Shelly Pesta and Kaitlyn Pesta, now 2. “She’s been really pivotal in this whole thing,” Shelly Pesta said of her daughter. “She’s been really good with Jake as far as challenging him - because she’s so active, young and doesn’t understand everything - so she makes him get up and play with her and do things. So she’s been really key to his rehabilitation and to our family being happy as opposed to sad.”

Shelly Pesta is no stranger to the medical field, having spent more than 15 years as a clinical oncology specialist with BioTech Medicine Sales and Marketing.

However, when her 7-year-old son, Jacob, was diagnosed with a brain tumor two years ago, she quit her corporate job to travel across the United States seeking treatment and rehabilitation therapy to help her son beat his cancer. Along the way, she found a new career, which she launched late last year in Farmington Hills.

"My little boy, at 5 years old, was diagnosed with a very rare, catastrophic brain tumor," Pesta said. "He is the first U.S. case, with the location, type and age of the tumor. And he's the sixth case written up internationally, in the world. So he's very much a trial and research case. His case is being handled by attendings all over the country."

Throughout the course of his illness, Jacob received a number of different therapies, including massage.

After coming home to Commerce Township, Pesta discovered a new LaVida Massage nearby and learned it was a franchise. Having long wanted to be an entrepreneur, Pesta decided to open her own LaVida in Hunters Square at 14 Mile and Orchard Lake Roads this past December.

"It's my hope that maybe two years down the road, it will generate an income, but also give me a little bit of distraction - something I can focus on so I can tear my brain away from the trauma we were going through as a family," Pesta said.

The far infrared sauna is quite different from the ordinary sauna in which the simple method of heating through the steam is used for sweating the human body. In an ordinary saunas the steam heats the air first which is then absorbed in our skin to produce sweat; where as in a far infrared sauna the rays heat up only the 20% of the air and the rest of the 80% heat directly penetrates our skin to a certain depth to bring the optimal results.

It is a very safe therapy it has numerous benefits and no side effects and is not even a big load on your pocket. Usually it is advised to most of the people that they should have a 20 minutes session if they are beginners and should exceed to 30-60 minutes; although some people can even have sessions till 2 hrs. The number of sessions which should or can be taken by the people is not fixed, but as these infrared saunas are not harmful for a normal person so it can be taken on a daily basis as well.

An infrared sauna session is very effective therapy for almost everybody but some people who have serious heart or lungs diseases or have any skin allergies should either avoid them or should have them under a constant supervision or according to any specialist’s consultancy. There certain sensitive aspects that have to correctly and cautiously examined, such as the pulse rate should not exceed 50 % and there should not be excessive sweating so that it may cause dehydration; skin rashes or infections may occur so immediate treatment should be taken according to the specialist’s advice. Therefore it is recommended that beginners must not have infrared sauna sessions alone.

The infrared sauna is also not really recommended for ladies who pregnant and for children below the age of five years. It is not because of the reason that infrared sauna is harmful but it is good to be cautious during any sensitive period or age.

It is advised that you should be accompanied or supervised by somebody during the session especially if you are a patient or suffering through some disability or sickness. This is for the purpose of both safety and personal satisfaction.
