Trustees OK seeking grants for fire gear
By MARY ANN GREIER

Trustees unanimously approved action Monday to apply for federal grants for a new fire engine and new air bottle fill stations for the fire department through the use of a grant writer.
Fire Chief Kevin Bryan said they're looking to replace pieces of equipment that are currently non-compliant for safety guidelines recommended through the National Fire Protection Association. In the case of the pumper truck to be replaced, he said the cab is open with jump seats. The new truck would have an enclosed four-door cab.
In the case of the new air bottle fill stations, one for the main fire station and one mobile unit for the rescue truck, they would be enclosed. The bottles would be placed inside an enclosed container for filling instead of being out in the open with a firefighter standing over them as they're being filled with air. Firefighters use the air tanks with masks to breathe during smoky situations.
Bryan asked for permission to pay Barbara Ross of Grant Source Professionals of Canfield $975 to write both Assistance to Firefighters Grants through the Federal Emergency Management Agency. The application deadline for both grants is Sept. 9.
Bryan explained that her up-front fee will be written into the grants, so if the township gets both grants, the fee paid now will come back to the township. Then she'll charge either 8 percent of the value of the grant or $3,500 for her fee. If the township doesn't get the grants, she'll write them the next year for free.
Her initial fee is $650 for the truck application and $325 for the air bottle filling system.
Bryan said this is the first time the department has applied for the AFG program and the first time they've used Ross as a grant writer, but he said other departments in the county have used her services with success.
Plans call for replacement of a 1977 pumper fire engine, with two quotes putting the price for a new vehicle between $320,000 and $340,000. Besides having an enclosed cab, he said he wants the new truck to have an automatic transmission as opposed to a standard transmission and to have a front suction feature. Currently, water can only be sucked from the side from a hydrant, dry hydrant, lake or water source.
