Gold and then some
No matter our personal tendencies, the holidays (for most) are pretty much wrapped up (unless you are even a bigger procrastinator than I). As well as trees, lights and tinsel, the Magis' gifts have also been packed away: no more gold, frankincense and myrrh until the end of the year. And haven't we just celebrated its beginning?
This is not completely true, however, for my yard remains filled with gold.
Yes, it's faded, quite pale and dusty in fact, but the goldfinches continue to be one of the steadiest birds at the feeder. One in fact has to search my records back to 1999 to find a month when their presence was not recorded.
I confess to being less observant than I think for it took my daughter's comment to make me realize - to make me SEE - that, once summer rolls around (and, yes, it will), the sexes are easily distinguished as in so many others of our birds. Then only the male turns the startlingly beautiful bright yellow. And why, until I consulted my bird bible, have I not also realized that only the male sports the black on his forehead, a cap slipped too far forward, and that only in the summertime. In the winter the male resembles the female as will the youngster of either sex until it matures.
Even in its palest shrouds, the goldfinch is a much needed touch of color in these wintry months. The blue jays flash seldom in spite of my efforts to tempt with fresh peanuts. The cardinal (males again) is gorgeous against the snowy ground but, if he comes to check my offerings, they must disappoint for he is heard more often than seen. Chickadees, juncos, the nuthatch, even the lovely titmouse - all designed to be camouflaged during our colorless months.
I read goldfinches prefer sunflower and niger seeds, the latter a new addition and not yet popular with much of anyone. The sunflower serves well as does the special mix I was feted with on my last birthday. (There's something after all to be said about going to the birds!
