College basketball: UNC picked ACC favorite

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- North Carolina is the favorite to win the Atlantic Coast Conference, while Tar Heels sophomore Harrison Barnes is the league’s preseason player of the year.

The Tar Heels were picked first on 57 of 59 ballots from media members during Wednesday’s ACC Operation Basketball event. UNC’s John Henson and Tyler Zeller joined Barnes as the top three vote-getters on the all-ACC team.

Duke was picked to finish second, followed by Florida State, Virginia, Miami, Virginia Tech, Clemson, North Carolina State, Maryland, Georgia Tech, Wake Forest and Boston College.

Duke’s Seth Curry, Miami’s Malcolm Grant and Virginia’s Mike Scott also made the all-ACC team. Duke’s Austin Rivers was rookie of the year.

ELSEWHERE -- Defending national champion Connecticut and Syracuse are the co-favorites to win the Big East regular-season title. They were tied in the coaches’ preseason poll on Wednesday, although Connecticut had seven first-place votes, two more than Syracuse. Louisville was third, followed by Pittsburgh, Cincinnati, Marquette, West Virginia, Villanova, Notre Dame, Georgetown, Rutgers, St. John’s, Seton Hall, South Florida, Providence and DePaul. Pittsburgh senior guard Ashton Gibbs has been chosen preseason player of the year and Connecticut freshman center Andre Drummond has been selected preseason rookie of the year.

Prep volleyball: Riverview knocks off Noles

SARASOTA -- Brittané Hunter racked up 13 kills, but the Southeast volleyball team suffered a 25-19, 25-17, 24-26, 25-19 defeat at Riverview.

The Seminoles (8-16) got 10 kills and 10 digs from Emma Bartges, five kills from Alex Pendleton, four kills from Bevin Mays and 31 assists from Tori Scovill. Shelby Skipper had five digs.

Prep basketball: BCS wins Impact tournament

MANATEE -- Bradenton Christian got 18 points and 10 rebounds from Nick Scheimann to defeat Impact A 62-59 at State College of Florida and move into the final four of the Fall Impact League.

Dylan during UMHoops has once again assembled the best and brightest in the world blogging college basketball (or in my case, someone who had nothing better to do) to get an overview of the Big Ten teams they cover. My answers to his questions are below. It will display previews for all Big Ten teams by people who know them best. So far, Penn State and Ohio State are in place, with others sure to follow.

The Gophers have lost 10 of their 11 games last season despite a promise last non-conference starts. What are the expectations for this season in Minneapolis?

With so many new faces in the team, the only real expectation of not losing 10 of last 11 games. The Big Ten should have something of a down year with the departure of so many top players from last year, finishing in the top half of the Big Ten, but no one would be shocked if the Gophers slip out of the bubble in the NIT. But hey, it's better than last year and better than most other teams in this city last year.

The backyard from Al Nolen and Blake Hoffarber graduated. Colton Iverson transferred to the State of Colorado. Dominique Dawson, a visit that played towards the end of the season was able to get a scholarship to Division II and enjoying free education. Andrew Hollins, who scored 46 points against Findlay Prep last season should be in the mix to one of the starting guard spots. Joe Coleman, younger brother of former Gopher Dan Coleman was Mr. MinnesotaBasketball is aggressive with great instincts and has a chance to start as a shooting guard. Osenieks Oto may be the best shooting team to three points, and is a good ball handler for a 6'8 "kid. Although not a rookie, Julian Welch, a junior college transfer and former Big West Player year at UC-Davis also has a chance to start a place of custody.
