Meat Week at area restaurants

Transitioning from the gouty excess of December to the repentant nibbling of January can produce a kind of whiplash. So why transition at all? Gorge away through Meat Weak, an eight-day barbecue spree across the DMV that starts tonight at Urban Bar-B-Que in Rockville. Currently in its eighth year, Meat Week began when a few friends in Tallahassee, Fla., decided to eat at a different barbecue restaurant each night for a week. But the carnivorous junket has expanded to 21 chapters across the United States (and, curiously, The Hague). D.C. is a fine site, too: The local barbecue scene has exploded in the last couple of years, and the Meat Week schedule also includes off-the-beaten-path Young & Hungry favorites like Mr. P’s Ribs and Fish. Even better, Meat Weekers are entitled to food and drink specials—tonight’s dinner at Urban comes with happy hour and sides on the house (paired with a helping of meat sweats). Organizers recommend RSVPing on the Meat Week site because some restaurants have limited seating. Nightly attendance isn’t mandatory, of course, and open-minded vegetarians are encouraged to attend—many popular barbecue sides are meatless. But if you’re vegan? Well, luckily, Meat-Free Week starts Feb. 6.

Meat Week begins at 6 p.m. at Urban Bar-B-Que, 2007 Chapman Ave., Rockville. (240) 290-4827. View complete schedule at meatweek.com/chapters/washingtondc .
