Businesses here don't conform to any mold. You will find an eclectic mix of old-fashioned stores like the Boone Drug Company and newer ones like Footsloggers, an outdoor sports mecca complete with a 40-foot-high climbing tower.
Tucked tightly between the ASU campus and the mountains, downtown Boone is compact and easy to maneuver on foot. However, parking may be a problem, a concern prompting local business to validate parking tickets.
Inside the Shoppes at Farmer's Hardware you will find the old bins used to store the nails, screws and bolts of years past. Now, there are a hundred booths stretched out on three floors and the old Watauga County Bank. If the" Shoppes" aren't enough to satisfy your tastes, down the street you'll find Loretta's Vendetta, a retro furniture store, as well as Anna Banana's consignment store and the Bead Box.
Along King Street the newly opened Mellow Mushroom remains a big draw, but you'll also find small cafés, a pub or two and Macado's, known for incredible sandwiches and larger-than-life cinnamon rolls. Take a walk to the Custard Depot for a tasty frozen treat.
Just outside downtown you will find the famous Daniel Boone Inn, a hard-to-miss establishment offering all-you-can-eat, family-style breakfast and dinner. For some tasty North Carolina Barbecue be sure and order the "Down South" sandwich, a mouth-watering blend of barbecue pork, turkey and chicken, at Bandana's along Highway 105.
