HACC-Lebanon Scraps LPN to RN Program

Students in their final year of the LPN to RN program at HACC's Lebanon campus were shocked Thursday afternoon when they learned they cannot complete their degree here.

Many have attended the Lebanon campus for the past three to five years, working at completing science and prerequisite courses. The 35 students who were to apply for the yearlong clinical classes and fieldwork of the Associate Degree Nursing program in Lebanon next week must now apply at the Harrisburg campus or Lancaster campus.

The students, who said they learned about the change from other students currently enrolled in the program, were upset because they say that there are not enough slots available at the two other campuses to accept all of them and there is tougher competition because of the number of students, which include nursing students who have not completed LPN coursework.

The Lebanon campus students said they are concerned that they will have to put their education on hold for an indefinite period of time.

"For us who have quit our jobs, have day care lined up, and everything else going on in our lives, with this plan, we'll now have to, I guess, make other plans, a week before we had planned to apply," said student Kelly DiNunzio of Palmyra.

For the students who get into the program, they will attend their specified campus for course work and lab practice. Students from Lebanon will be considered for the available Lebanon clinical sites. However, the students said there is competition there as well, since many Lancaster campus students vie for fieldwork in Lebanon.

The Lebanon students said the program is tailored to their needs since they are already coming into the program with specialized training and experience. In addition, the program allows them to learn with others who are in similar situations.

DiNunzio also pointed out the program has grown every year since it began in 2008.

"Why cut it while it's growing?" she asked.
