Caravan show booming

Retired farming couple Kate and Michael Pugh came up from Upper Lurg, near Benalla, to buy a “fifth wheel” caravan in the $100,000 to $120,000 range but the show is also displaying more modest caravans as well as tents of all kinds.

“We are looking to travel in a big way and follow the sun,’’ Mr Pugh said.

Another retired farming couple, Nanette and John Hall, of Bright, are old hands at caravanning but were looking for a new $50,000-$60,000 model.

“We just sold our old Windsor for $6500 which is what I paid for it years ago,’’ Mr Hall said.

“Now that we are heading for our 80s, we wanted something more comfortable with a shower and toilet.’’

The first three-day event at Wodonga Showgrounds opened in bright sunshine with good weekend weather predicted.

Organiser, the Caravan Trade and Industries Association of Victoria, hopes attendance will top 15,000.

Association president Peter May and chief executive Rob Lucas were elated to see so many exhibitors from the Border and across Victoria.

“We are going to make this an annual event,” Mr May said.

“This site is the best we could find in Victoria.”

Mr Lucas said the show was a great boost for the Albury-Wodonga economy with visitors from the North East and Riverina and dealers from Melbourne.

Numurkah visitor Marilyn Charlton was part of a Cobram Caravan Club contingent who camped at the Lake Hume resort.

“We have 15 caravans and most are staying all weekend,’’ Mrs Charlton said.

The show features 38 brands of caravans, with 130 models on show, plus 15 tent suppliers and numerous other suppliers of equipment needed for travelling on wheels.

Items range from fridges and coolers to safes, cooking utensils, tools and tow-ropes, with even a small boat or two and some kayaks.

Of course a camping trip can be an extremely enjoyable and special experience provided you are well prepared and are armed with all the camping gear necessities to see you through till you return home. Flashlights, lanterns, sleeping bags or blankets, pillows, pots and pans, utensils, cooler, rain gear, folding chairs, campfire wood are all essentials for a great camping trip.
