What it means to be better is often taken for granted. Inherent in better is a comparison to something else. Without the comparison of two things, one being “better” than the other, without “the other” we just have the one thing. Therefore, it’s important when one looks at better that they’re thinking about what they maybe comparing it to.
No matter where we’re at we’re going to be faced with the need to do better.
No matter what we’ve achieved we’re going to have to work at doing better.
Nobody, who feels inclined to do better, ever stops, because it’s not like having a best-selling book, getting paid a million dollars, receiving a Grammy, whatever it is, is satisfied with that. These milestones are just things that happen on the way to better.
Better isn’t a place, or a process, or a state of mind. It’s an attitude.
To do better is to be even more than you’re best, because as soon as you’ve reached your best, you’re ready to do better than even that. That’s one of the things I love about the idea of an individual’s “personal best” — or a person’s best performance at a task to date.
