Public art project installed on Wisconsin Avenue

Workers have begun the installation of the long awaited public arts project that began back in 2009. Five ‘kiosks’ have been installed on light posts on the north side of Wisconsin Avenue in front of the Northwestern Mutual offices. Each of the kiosks features three animated flip screens of Milwaukee pedestrian encounters. The project is part of the city’s original master plan for downtown and a grant from the Wisconsin Department of Transportation under the Federal Congestion Mitigation and Air Quality Program. The grant is intended to promote walking as an alternative means of transportation and public art was an amenity suggested as part of that project. Janet Zweig was selected from 50 artists. She was born in Milwaukee but currently lives on the East Coast. She has also installed a moving light sculpture for a library in Washington, a sentence generating sculpture for an engineering school in Orlando, Fla and an interactive project in eleven Light Rail train stations in Minnesota among others. In addition to creating nitrogen ice creams and sorbets in traditional flavors, Ciohon has come up with a dark chocolate ice cream spiked with bourbon and added door county cherries and chocolate covered bacon. He has also developed a watermelon sorbet using fresh fruit; brazilian fried banana ice cream and Flancicles, which are classic caramel flans on a stick, frozen with liquid nitrogen. “It’s such a unique process,” Ciohon said. “We’ve been experimenting with liquid nitrogen for about three months. We’ve found that the opportunities are endless, especially since it allows us to experiment and freeze alcohol in ways we can’t do with traditional freezing. It allows us to play with a lot of different flavors.” One of Sabor’s signature cocktails is the Caipirinha, a traditional Brazilian cocktail that features a sweet sugar cane liquor. Ciohon has developed a NitroCaipirinha for the menu at Beta by Sabor and has also experimented with freezing traditional ingredients like bacon, mozzarella, mint and seasonings to create ‘dusts’ for other dishes on the menu. In addition to Dettmann, the other main speaker at the Fittest Execs event will be Dean Rosson, the president and founder of Atlanta-based Fit2Win, which specializes in “powerful transformation through health and wellness.” Rosson is a resource specialist for Vistage International Inc., a global chief executive organization. An author, business speaker, certified sports nutritionist, certified fitness trainer and former competitive bodybuilder, Rosson specializes in transforming individuals, companies and organizations to improve their productivity and lower health care costs. Dettmann is completing his 22nd year as the strength and conditioning coach for UW, and until early 2009 was the head strength coach for the UW football team. During his tenure with the UW football team the Badgers won three Rose Bowls and appeared in 14 bowl games. At the Fittest Execs event, Dettmann will discuss how he has worked to maximize the performance of UW athletes, including Heisman Trophy winner Ron Dayne. According to Dick Geyer, president and chief executive officer of the Wisocnsin Center Distric, host of WinterFest, the highlight of the festival will be the Winter Wonderland rink, an indoor synthetic ice rink open for public skating.  “We’ve taken the ice out of ice skating and created a rink with the fascinations of winter without the frustrations of the cold,” Geyer said.  “We’re putting together a program with events and activities to make the Holiday season memorable and to get 2012 off to a rousing start,” said Frank Gimbel, chairman of the Wisconsin Center District.  “The entire festival is designed to make Milwaukee a place to come to, enjoy and remember.  We look forward to making it part of families’ Holiday traditions.” Croissant Etc. is a manufacturer and wholesaler of frozen dough and fully baked croissants, shipped from its Greendale facility. National food service providers and supermarket chains are its primary customers, with its products distributed as far away as Pennsylvania, according to Carollo. Some of its products are sold locally at Grasch Foods and Sendik's. “Summer fairs, festivals and special events like the Great Taste of the Midwest beer tasting in Madison and Point’s Fish Fry & A Flick at Milwaukee’s Discovery World are great venues for introducing a new beer,” said Martino, who noted bottle packages for the new brew are currently in development. “They say blondes have more fun, and our goal with a draft-beer rollout is to make it fun for beer lovers all across Wisconsin to sample Drop Dead Blonde Ale this summer.” “Snap-on is pleased to welcome Henry Knueppel to our board of directors,” said W. Dudley Lehman, Snap-on director and chair of the corporate governance and nominating committee. "Henry has extensive experience in the industrial arena and has demonstrated many years of continuing business success. We look forward to him being a valuable member of the Snap-on team.

Anton Gustafsson Hangs Up His Skates

"Anton is a highly skilled player with strong puckhandling skills and playmaking ability. He is an effective passer through traffic who also has a good selection of shots. He's a tall, strong and talented two-way center with good vision and a fine understanding of the game. He plays a mature game even when playing against opponents who were two or three years older." He returned just before Hershey headed to the Calder Cup playoffs, and played his first game in April, recording two assists in his professional debut and earning the game's third star in the win over Norfolk.  While he was on the roster for the Calder Cup playoffs, that April game was the first, and last, game he played with Hershey. 2010's training camp was his chance.  He was healthy and in his third camp.  It was one of his last shots at cracking the roster in Washington, or at the very least, Hershey.  But he still didn't seem to be all-there.  After Coach Boudreau had pointed him out during development camp as being a player who had improved from the previous year, Gustafsson was nearly invisible in training camp.  Subsequently, on September 22, he was sent down to Hershey. There, he appeared in one preseason game for the Chocolate and White, notching one assist on a goal by Nikita Kashirsky .  On October 3, it was announced that Gustafsson was sent down to South Carolina.  He played in their opener, a 3-2 OT loss to the Greenville Road Warriors , but failed to record a single point and went -1 for the night.  He also had zero shots on net. Who knows what is going through Gustafsson's head right now, but perhaps it is a good idea for him to step back and re-evaluate himself and what he expects out of himself.  If he decides to come back at some point, he's able to - the Caps are suspending his contract, not voiding it.
