I Don't Know How She Does It: Working Moms and Lice
, That made me laugh so hard I almost started to weep. I wasn't totally crazy about the book (especially the ending) - and I'm not sure I'm willing to fork over $40 bucks to the babysitter to go see the movie (except maybe to review it for this blog) - but the trailer really hit a chord. To be precise, it's the scene at 1:32 (in the official trailer) that totally slayed me. The SJP character, a high-flying, hard charging, working mom who's struggling - in a completely over-the-top way - to manage motherhood, marriage and her career, receives an awful text message on her way into an important business meeting:
KIDS SENT HOME WITH LICE. GET CHECKED!
She then proceeds to scratch her head in panic during the entire meeting. Now when I say we, I mostly mean my daughter, the one with the formerly long, curly hair who now sports a cute bob. She who likes to hug, kiss, tell secrets and rub up against lice-ridden class- and team-mates. (OK, I'm kidding about the last one but seriously it has to come from somewhere.)
Although my daughter's been the main victim, the parasite takes over our entire family's life. There's the constant laundering of all the sheets and towels, bagging up the dolls and stuffed animals, and vacuuming the car seats. Then, there's the time-intensive and tedious three-week regimen of checking, treating, and combing all family members' heads. And the endless nitpicking sessions.
Plus, I've spent hours online researching the life cycle of pediculus humanus capitis and the scientific support for various treatment options. (We've used everything from chemicals to professional nitpickers to the highly effective Head Lice to Dead Lice olive oil protocol. I'll spare you the pictures of my family with shower caps on all of our heads.) I've even volunteered to check the heads of my daughter's entire soccer team. It's a real time killer, especially for working moms. To put it mildly, lice prevention and treatment is not the kind of thing your ordinary working mom wants to squeeze into her already busy nights and days.

Head Lice - Facts on Life Cycle, Symptoms, Prevention and Much ...
Who doesn’t know about head lice; they are pestering parasitic wingless insects that usually infest thick hair of the scalp. These creatures need human blood to stay alive, which is why they would bite on the skin of the scalp several times in a day. They stay close to the scalp in order to maintain their body temperature but it also works for them to stay out of sight. So far research has shown that humans and chimpanzees are its only hosts.
Head lice are a menace because they are easily transferred from one to the other; they multiply rapidly and it becomes almost impossible to get rid of them. A bad level of personal hygiene is not the cause behind it; in fact anyone, belonging to any age group or social status can suffer from this problem which is much pronounced in every continent.
Life Cycle of the Head LouseCompared to many insects of this size or even bigger, the head lice (Pediculushumanuscapitis) live for a considerably longer period of about 4 weeks or 30 days but only with its host. After the head lice reaches adult hood it can start reproducing only after 10 hours and it can do that very frequently after 24 hours are complete.
The females can lay up to 3 – 4 eggs daily; which means that in a lifespan of a month, it can lay up to 150 nits. The eggs then take around 8 – 9 days to hatch and the newly hatched lice baby is known as nymph. The nymph matures into an adult louse after going through three molt stages and this can take up to 9 – 12 days depending upon how close they stay to their host. The adults live up to 30 days, only if they stay on the host, if they fall down they will easily die within 48 hours.
Types of Head LiceThe head louse goes through many developmental changes which differentiates them into their different types.
Constant itching, Irritation on the scalp, The presence of white nits in the hair which gives the appearance of dandruff.
