Alliee DeArmond, In The Spirit: Dressed for Halloween success
One of my favorite Halloween memories is when my 15-year-old son went forth with his 3-year-old brother. We pinned and plastered the teen's long hair into an outrageous mohawk. He wore motorcycle leathers and boots, with lots of chains. Cool. Took a week to get all the goop out of his hair. His little brother was a pirate.
First we visited the Harvest Festival at Coastlands. "Safe and sane," somebody muttered, glancing at the "bad" teen as we entered. Coastlands' small groups had set up game booths with candy prizes. They did a great job, but it felt hollow to me. Kids parading through businesses feels equally canned. "Real" Halloween is hitting the neighborhood.
OK, I admit it. We live in an area where houses are far apart and have steep driveways. Too often you end up panting at the top of a hill, in front of a disappointingly dark house. The upside is that people who do have candy are so thrilled to see a visitor, they unload half a bag of treats. Nonetheless, it didn't take long for my kids to figure out that their friends' neighborhoods provided a richer field of operations.
After enjoying the Harvest Festival, we drove to a nearby neighborhood. My husband and I lurked in the street while the two brothers braved the front porches. What made this a favorite memory was watching the people open their doors. They would tense up at the sight of my eldest, then visibly relax when they looked down at his pirate sidekick. A smile every time.
The Coastlands' Sweets and Treats Theme Park Adventure in Aptos, and Santa Cruz Bible Church's Family Fall Festival on Frederick Street in Santa Cruz both begin at 6 p.m. Monday. These alternatives provide safe, sane, family fun, without the Halloween death culture so often exhibited elsewhere. Enjoy yourself. Meanwhile, don't forget the second greatest commandment: Love your hood.
THE REAL THING
My middle son had a medieval-theme wedding, asking the guests to come in costume. During the reception an elaborately dressed Merlin sidled up to Bishop John-David Schofield, who had led the ceremony. Pointing a crystal ball topped walking stick at the bishop, Merlin said, "Nice costume.
