Photos: Pop-up beach on Magnolia in Fort Worth
In some cities, urban activists have done “pop-up parks” – taking over an on-street parking space and reclaiming it for human use by turning it into a small park space for a day (or longer).
Well, if you know Fort Worth, you know it’s been really damned hot lately, with temperatures hovering around 110 during the day . Leave it up to Near Southside ingenuity to take the pop-up park concept and turn it into something still more off-kilter.
Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to Magnolia Beach.
The industrious folks at Creative Magma, a marketing & web design firm located on Magnolia Avenue between Lake & 5th, reclaimed the street parking space in front of their office today with the help of a swimming pool, beach chairs, and several bags of sand. I’m going to go ahead and dub it “Magnolia Beach,” in hopes it might become a regular thing.
Creative Magma set out the sand and chairs and, lacking a water hose, carried bucket after bucket of water from their office kitchen to the pool, and brought out their WiFi-enabled laptops to work poolside, nestled snugly under a tree beside the Magnolia Avenue bike lanes (much to the delight of both drivers and cyclists). Speaking to the team, they remarked that they had such a good time with the project that they’re planning on doing it again, only somewhat more elaborately.
I have to say – I wholeheartedly endorse this event and would love to see it happen again to give Near Southsiders a spot to have some fun and cool off from the brutal Texas summer (especially given that the city hasn’t been able to scrape together funds to keep the public pools open). Given some more businesses participating, this could turn into quite a tradition – imagine a long stretch of Magnolia parking spaces turned into gather spots with pools, palm trees, umbrellas & chairs, and sand. It’d be one heck of a fun project.
