The Moppet Players reunite for a 50-year reunion

The group celebrated a meeting in August of 50 years with a torch, make candles, and with many candles blazing on top of a Bundt cake to spice up the drama of the highly anticipated meeting.

"It was so emotional for everybody," said Coon Rapids resident Helen (Mithun) Rannow.

Rannow, 59, her sister Marlene Braun, 62, also of Coon Rapids, and their brother Ervin Mithun, 64, of Lebanon, Oregon, And his cousin Rick Stoneburg, 57, of Blaine were some of the children in the back of the neighborhood in the West Bank in the 1960s who joined the theater group of children looking for something to do after school and on weekends. It took a journey of fantasy and fun.

Too shy to act, Rannow and Braun has worked as stage crew. They painted a landscape inhabited and concessions, selling orange drinks and candy during intermission, and helped clean up. They collected tickets at the door. Cost of admission to theater at the time was 25 cents.

As part of the duty of cleaning Rannow vaguely remember as a strapping 10-year brushes down his feet and skating around the floor of a renovated police station that once housed the theater Moppet.

"It was really all about children," said Rannow the group.

Braun said, "It was our playground of the imagination. We had the means and the costumes and the people around to stimulate our imagination."

The founders

Beth Linnerson-Daly, with technical support from his brother John Linnerson, founded and directed children Moppet Players Theatre in 1961. The courageous student theater at the University of Minnesota in 60 years was a waitress at Mama Rosa restaurant in Minneapolis.When the owner informed a back room was available for plays, Linnerson-Daly soon put into action what was to become a popular theater company for kids to immerse themselves in a landscape scene and creation, to promote the hope and friendship, and create a haven, an escape for children of what was otherwise known as a poor neighborhood in Minneapolis at the time.
