Back-to-school stock tips for students (and analysts)
Students are coming back to school, and soon they’ll be pitching stocks to clubs, recruiters and stock competitions . Here are some tips for student stock pitches, and a few tips for the pros as well.
Know your customer
If you’re pitching a stock to a firm, look at the funds and their holdings. If a portfolio manager is talking to you, look at their other funds and those holdings. Try to determine the type of stock that they like, and be mindful of the style of the fund. If they manage a midcap portfolio, pitch a midcap stock. If they manage a growth portfolio, pitch a growth stock. Realize that the name of the fund may not indicate what you think is in the fund.

Many years ago, I had the opportunity to watch a student group pitch a stock to one of the top folks at a huge public company. This company was well known to the public for investing in large companies that were easy to understand, and stocks that were easily classified as ‘value’. The student group pitched an early startup bio-tech company. It’s not a good idea to pitch a questionable bio-tech growth stock to a large-cap value firm. After politely listening to the pitch, the director declined, wished the students well and shook their hands. These students did not know their customer.
It’s a stock pitch, not a marketing pitch
Sometimes, I’ll watch as students pitch stocks as if they are marketing the product. Students, don’t be offended by what I just said, some analysts do the same thing. Stocks are sometimes pitched as stories, as they are easier to explain to the public. To be a bit critical, I could argue that these stories are probably known and already factored into the price of the stock. Sure, I want to know a bit about the company, but if you’re pitching for 15 minutes, I should know what the company is within the first 2 minutes. Spend the rest of the time talking about numbers, competitors, risk, catalysts, but don’t spend 12 of the 15 minutes talking to me about how great the next Apple ( NASDAQ:AAPL ) product is. It’s a stock pitch, not a marketing pitch. I can talk to a marketing students for a marketing pitch.
