TRAIN BLOG (WSAU) The Lake Shore Limited pulls into Albany, New York on a warm, sunny afternoon. She’s a very long, but odd-looking train. Behind her two engines are two baggage cars, two sleeping cars, a heritage coach, a lounge car, a dining car, three more sleepers, four more coaches, and a string of mail-storage box-cars on the rear.
You’d never put a picture of this train on a calendar or an Amtrak TV commercial. The cars don’t match. Her viewliner sleepers are large and angular. The lounge car, a tube-shaped Amfleet car, doesn’t match-up well with the other cars. The diner is from the 1950s – a hand-me-down from the Baltimore & Ohio. The silver box-cars are filled with third-class mail from the U.S. Postal Service in Chicago.
At Albany, the engines are disconnected and the train gets re-shuffled. The Lake Shore Limited gets cut into two. Number 449 will head across the Berkshires to Boston. Number 49 will head down the Hudson River to New York City. Separating and rearranging the train will take about 45-minutes.
I get out of my coach and watch the action from the platform. The two engines, which have pulled the train from Chicago, are cut off and pull down the tracks to the switch, then reverse and move back to Albany’s engine-servicing facility. Their work is done. They’ll be refueled and sent back to Chicagoon tonight’s Lake Shore Limited. A new engine for the Boston section is waiting on the side track. The train is uncoupled between the lounge and the dining car. The lounge and everything in front of it goes to Boston. The diner and everything behind it go to New York. Then the New York section gets pulled forward, the mail cars are cut off the back, and a switcher pulls them into a siding where U.S.P.S trucks will deliver their magazines and catalogues.
This is some of the most-complicated switching in the entire Amtrak system.
The only other switching Amtrak does around the nation is the Empire Builder, which is split into Portland and Seattle sections in Spokane,Washington.
