Dump Trucks Damage Evansville Roads

Some people in one west side Evansville neighborhood are trying to get to the bottom of a rocky mess.  They're concerned about the damage to their roads, and say it's caused by overloaded dump trucks that are driving on Harmonie Way and West Maryland which have signs posted for a 10 ton limit.  Doug Curtis is trying to get a message out.  He's called the city, county, state, engineers, and safety board, but says he's been told there's nothing they can do.  Friday morning, he decided to protest.

Truck after truck.  Load after load.  Harmonie Way and West Maryland have turned into busy roads.  Neighbors here say they are sick of the heavy traffic and the damage left behind.
 
"It's been a nightmare. I mean the dust is horrible.  The road is cracking up, I mean I've called the city. They said they were going to talk to them but they never sent anyone out. My concern is are they going to fix it, you know it's a dead end street. We don't get a lot of road work done there anyway," Mark Enlow said. 

"Now they're weighing an excess of 25-30 ton. It's clearly marked a 10 ton road. They're 1/10 of a mile from Diamond Avenue which is a designated truck route. They should be on that road to St. Joe, up Maryland. It's 6.3 miles to here," Doug Curtis said.
 
Doug Curtis says the dump trucks are splitting the roads.  The trucks, which are contracted through Blankenberger Brothers, are traveling from the University Parkway construction project near St. Joseph Road and Highway 66, to Harmonie Way to West Maryland to unload material at Mater Dei High School. 

"Oh, here comes another one, fully loaded. I know they're just trying to make a living and I don't blame them but the city should say enough is enough," Curtis said.

The aftermath of Irene has been made much easier because of the Town’s rapid response. A few customers at Ellen’s Coffee Shop & Family Restaurant highlighted how quickly the Town moved to clear the streets.

“They really do a great job,” a customer said. “They have a good work ethic, and they set a standard for how [government is supposed] to work.”

“I can’t believe they’re here this fast, this is too cool, “said Shelley Mimch of Radcliffe Drive. “I’m very greatful for the work of town.”

Chestertown Street Department Superintendent James Robert (J. R.) Trego, Sr., said they were able get a lot of tree debris without being called.

“Our phones have been down at the Town Office all morning, but usually we get to them before they call it in,” Trego said. “We came in early Sunday morning and picked up probably a dozen trees in the road…today there are a lot of the trees in people’s yards, but they have to chop them up and bring [the debris to the curb].”

Trego said that tree damage from Irene paled in comparison to Isabel and that clean up would be quick.

“Isabel was horrific…it really was.” Trego said. “I’m thinking maybe three days for clean up on this one.”

Trego also praised town workers in the clean-up effort.

“Yes indeed, I can depend on my fellas’, they are good workers,” Trego said.

Chestertown Town Manager Bill Ingersoll said damage to town property was inconsequential.

“There was minimal damage to Town structures or properties. Roof leaks, branches down and small power outages were the only incidents experienced,” Ingersoll said.

Ingersoll also said that tree debris placed at the curb by private contractors would not be eligible for free pick up.

“We have two, ten-ton dump trucks running all day with brush and limbs,” Ingersoll said. “The Town will only remove damage from the storm that homeowners bring to the curb themselves. Jobs done by commercial companies are not eligible, they must haul the debris themselves. Though the street crew [can see] many of the debris piles, we encourage all property owners to notify our office (410-778-0500) of pick-ups.
