Tax-free deals create 'a very busy weekend' for SC stores
Back-to-school shopping started in earnest in Columbia at a minute past midnight Friday morning.
That’s when Old Navy opened the doors at its Harbison store to customers scrambling to take advantage of South Carolina’s tax-free weekend for everything from blue jeans to tablet computers.
It wasn’t Black Friday, when hundreds line up in the wee hours of the morning for holiday savings the day after Thanksgiving. But it could be a sign of how big the state’s sales tax holiday – now in its 12th years – has become as shoppers look to save money on necessities in a down economy.
Shoppers save an estimated $3 million a year during the weekend, according to the S.C. Department of Revenue.
Still, Old Navy leaves little to chance, pairing the sales tax holiday with a denim sale for early-bird shoppers and sending out fliers and notices on social media.
“They knew about (the early opening),” said Staci James, Old Navy pricing specialist on duty Friday at the Harbison store.
Through midnight Sunday, shoppers will save the state’s sales tax and local option sales taxes of between 5 percent and 7 percent on a laundry list of items deemed school supplies. And many stores are offering extended hours and special sales to draw in consumers.
Old Navy, for example, had polo shirts on sale for $5 and khaki pants for $10 and denim until 9 a.m. was selling for $19 for adults and $10 for kids.
Andre and Kimberly Wise drove from Blair, along with their four children, for the early savings at the store Friday morning. They bought four pairs of khaki pants, three black polo shirts, and three pair of jeans.
“It saved me a lot of money,” said Kimberly Wise, a cashier, speaking of the sales tax deduction. “With four kids, every little bit helps.”
The polo shirts and khakis are the uniforms for Wise’s fourth- and sixth-grader at McCoy-Liston Elementary School in Fairfield County, and the jeans are for her 7th seventh-grader, Ivan, who attends Fairfield Middle School.
