Vancouver Aquarium's new temporary exhibit opens tomorrow

Daisy, the harbor porpoise, the green turtle Schoon, Da Vinci harbor seals and many other animals each have a unique story based on some common difficult - their rehabilitation and new life is nothing less than miraculous. They were found stranded in distress, saved and struggled to survive. After being treated, cared for - sometimes for weeks - and rehabilitated by a team of incredibly dedicated staff and volunteers, they are now healthy and growing animals.

"For over 40 years, the Vancouver Aquarium Marine Rescue Centre was one of Canada's main mammal rescue centers for animals," said Clint Wright, senior vice president and general manager of the Vancouver Aquarium . "Every year we save about 150 animals along the coast of BC and the vast majority of them are successfully rehabilitated and returned to their natural habitat. For a very few that would not survived their own in the wild, the Vancouver Aquarium is able to provide housing and long-term care."

For four new daily shows, visitors can learn about the miraculous story of Daisy, and more: Helen, Hanna and Spinnaker, three Pacific white-sided dolphins rescued after being found entangled in fishing nets set at off the coast of Japan.

Interpretive staff will present these amazing animals to the public and to highlight their dramatic rescue and anti amazing to beat the odds. MILWAUKEE - The I-Team helped crack down on puppy mills in Wisconsin. Now there's a fight to change the law that many say is keeping dogs safe.

The people behind the change want to increase the number of dogs you can sell in a year from 25 to 100. They say it protects good breeders.

Organizations like the Wisconsin Humane Society say it might be the right intention, but it will have the wrong outcome.

Representative Don Pridemore of Hartford claims the restrictions in the current law are hurting small breeders like Jacquelyn Fogel.

So, Pridemore took TODAY'S TMJ4 on a tour of Fogel's West Bend home, where she breeds different kinds of dogs.

Fogel has 12 puppies and 17 dogs at her home, 3 dogs on the road with a handler, and 5 at a boarding kennel.

"We're not the problem, we're the answer to the problem. We're breeding the dogs that are the healthier ones, the ones the public should be interested in buying," said Fogel.

Pridemore wants to raise the number of dogs breeders can sell a year to 100, without being regulated. He says breeders like Fogel are an example of why it will work.

"This is not a puppy mill. This is a small breeder that cares about the breed, cares about the condition of the animals."

The problem, according to Jill Kline with the Wisconsin Humane Society, is that not all breeders are like Fogel. "Some of the most egregious conditions have been found in this state in facilities selling between 25 and 100 dogs a year."

The Wisconsin Humane Society is adamantly opposed to Pridemore's legislation. Kline believes there's no reason to raise the limit if a breeder is in it for the right reasons.

"I think there are some really great reputable breeders in Wisconsin. In fact, many breeders will have no problem complying with this law because they're already providing wonderful standards of care for their animals.
