Toyota FJ Cruiser escapes the bland brand

Fortunately it seems that the world’s largest car manufacturer does have one saving grace lurking up its corporate sleeve and that, my friends, can be found within the bulk of its FJ Cruiser. Unveiled to the local motoring press last Monday, this chunky off-roader might not be everybody’s cup of tea but those overly butch proportions do give it something that products of the Aichi firm have been lacking for decades: Attitude.

And it achieves this by dipping into the family gene pool. Yep, drawing clear design inspiration from the original Land Cruiser FJ40 that became an icon back in the days when sex was safe and motor racing dangerous, the FJ Cruiser is a modern homage to the vehicles that define Toyota’s bundu-bashing past. This means you get an upright windscreen; a squared-off nose; two round headlights and that trademark white roof.

Complemented by over-square wheel arches and a classic spare wheel neatly bolted to the rear cargo door, all this retro-penned goodness culminates in a car that turns heads wherever it may rumble to next. Drawing parallels to the Hummer H3 is inevitable but not entirely unjustified, as the FJ Cruiser is similarly intimidating in size and stature. Again, not everyone’s idea of motoring nirvana, but attention-seekers will lap it up.

They’ll also enjoy the fact that no less than four different models are available, with each offering its own unique design flavour. And kicking things off is the entry-level Base model which, shipping sans any cosmetic tinsel, is ideal for people who wish to customize their FJ Cruiser however they see fit.
