Pachysandra: You love it, or hate it

Within a few days after that column appeared in the newspaper, I got a few phone calls from friends (some of whom I had previously donated pachysandra from my yard) and about a dozen emails. I even got an earful during several spur-of-the-moment conversations with people I ran into in the aisles of the grocery store and at Farmer's Market last Wednesday!

What follows is a synopsis of what our readers had to say about it, and my reply.

The bottom line is, most readers agreed that pachysandra can get out of control if not ruthlessly managed.

One reader asked how best to keep a neat edge around his pachysandra bed if the pachysandra will eventually breach the plastic edging he'd installed.

Ben F: I make a neat edge by plunging a sharp straight shovel into the plant bed to slice off the scraggly plants from the bed, which I pull and discard. Alternately, a lawn edger will work if the cutting blade is set deep enough to reach the plants' roots.

This is at most a temporary fix because the roots of the remaining plants will continue to spread and send more plants that you will have to confront again.

Carol B: I am happy with my pachysandra, but maybe we haven't had it long enough.

Ben F: Trust me. You haven't.

Carol B: My pachysandra is planted between the edge of our sod and woods, and stays nicely on its side of the black plastic edging.

Ben F: So far, that is.

Carol B: I like pachysandra much better than the snow-on-the-mountain, lily-of-the-valley and creeping Charlie that have traveled willy-nilly in our yard. I had used the creeping Charlie in an annual container and dumped it in the compost pile. We use "passive" (lazy) composting, so it was several years before getting to the bottom of the pile and the creeping Charlie was still growing! That should have been a warning, but I thought I would plant it in some of the "hard to grow anything" spots. It is now in the grass in many places.

Ben F: Proof positive that a plant that will grow anywhere will probably grow everywhere.

Herbicides draw concern in war on weeds

Pull the weeds and ditch the indifference

We've had hot, dry stretches followed by hot, wet stretches – apparently perfect conditions for foxtail, dandelions and other unwanted pests. It's too bad some residents and businesses are not motivated to remove the intruders from their sidewalks,
