In May 1792, American trader / sailor Robert Gray became the first non-native to enter the fabled "Great River of the West," the Columbia River. Later that year, Lieutenant William Broughton UK, serving under Capt. George Vancouver, explored 100 miles upriver. On the way, he named a point of land along the shore in honor of his commander. Finally, in 1857, the City of Vancouver was incorporated. During the rest of the century, Vancouver continued to grow. In 1908 the first railway to the east side of Washington from the Columbia River Gorge reaches Vancouver. In 1910, a railway bridge was opened to the south through Colombia.In 1917, the highway bridge was completed. During the First World War, the site later named Pearson Field was the site of the largest spruce cut-up mill. He cut raw wood in the wood used to build the planes that helped win the war in Europe. During the Second World War, Kaiser Vancouver Shipyard built a variety of craft that contributed greatly to the war effort of America.
