Flood Risk for farmer and Dyke Relocation - Articles - Water Wiki

The Biosphere Reserve Lower Saxonian Elbe Valley (Biosphärenreservat Niedersächsische Elbtalaue), which was created on the basis of an unanimous decision by the Lower Saxonian State Parliament in 2002, represents Lower Saxony’s contribution to the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve ‘Flusslandschaft Elbe’ (Elbe River Landscape). It stretches for about 100 kilometres south-east of Hamburg and is devided The Chamber of Agriculture, Lower Saxony, analysed the situation for two farms. The first one was highly affected by flood events for several times, the second is threatening by the consequences of dyke relocation. The outcome is not representative for other farms in a similar situation, but on one hand it illustrates the consequences of flood events and on the other hand of flood protection. The inundation area of the Lower-Saxony part of the river Elbe has a range of 6.100 ha. It is to 80 p.c. grassland, used by 300 farmers. This grassland is the food basis for dairy cows and beef cattle, horses and sheep. The area is flooded from the river Elbe once during winter time and nearly every forth year once in the spring or early summer. The second examined farm is a traditional one, which was established in 1860. First, it was a dairy farm, later it became a sheepfarm to protect dykes, which is traditional in some German regions. In Lower Saxony sheep are still grazing on dykes in contrast to other German federal states (e.g. Mecklenburg-West Pomerania) where it is forbidden to tend sheep on dykes. The farm is situated in a very low-lying area. During flood the shepherd and his family need a boat to get from their house to the dyke. In the flood simulation below In 2011 the family had the third experience of a hundred-year flood within eight years. In 2002 the water (water level 2 cm below design flood) destroyed the basement of the old farmhouse. After this a protective bank (smaller dyke) was build around the property.
