Marty Mehling, a retired Duluth firefighter, had planned to fly to New York to volunteer his services in the wake of the powerful storm that raked the East Coast on Sunday. But his flight got canceled, prompting him to hit the road Sunday morning for a nearly 1,200-mile drive to a Red Cross relief base in Middleton, N.Y.
Hurricane Irene was downgraded to a tropical storm as it moved up the coast, but it still caused plenty of damage and disruption.
Mehling has made a three-week commitment to help distribute food, cleaning supplies and other items that could help storm victims piece their lives back together.
“I enjoy doing it, and there’s a need,” he said. “If something big like this happened in Duluth, the same people would be coming from all over the country to help us, too.”
Earl Rogers, owner of Duluth Travel, said many flight cancellations were announced in advance, allowing most of his clients to make alternative bookings. But he said: “Any time you have big airports close, it affects thousands and thousands of people.”
Still, Rogers said he’d had no calls from clients stuck en route Sunday.
At a local level, the flight cancellations had a minimal impact, said Brian Grefe, Duluth International Airport’s director of operations.

Mobile virtual network operators – intermediaries that buy capacity on mobile networks and sell it under their own brands – have made great inroads in mobile markets overseas, but in New Zealand they are yet to put the heat on the big three incumbents.
Figures from researcher IDC show MVNOs, which include TelstraClear, Orcon and Slingshot, accounted for just 1 per cent, or 60,000, of the 5.42 million mobile connections in New Zealand as of March.
IDC telecommunications analyst Rosalie Nelson said that had grown from 0.3 per cent in 2009 but was still a very small slice of the pie.
MVNOs were often limited by their wholesale contracts in what they could offer in the way of aggressive and differentiated deals, she said.
Telecommunications Users Association chief executive Paul Brislen said MVNOs were offering good deals "in so far as they can go".
It was likely their contracts with Vodafone and Telecom prevented them from selling pre-pay services, which had been the growth area for successful MVNOs such as British supermarket chain Tesco and Virgin Mobile, Brislen said.
Plans from the likes of CallPlus and TelstraClear were not aggressively, but "interestingly" priced, he said, and much simpler than the often confusing plans from the three major players.
TelstraClear claims about 45,000 mobile connections through Vodafone's network – giving it the largest share of the MVNO market by far.
Its consumer plan charges people a $20 per month subscription fee for access to 19c-a-minute national calling and 500 texts.
Mobile manager Craig Yiyu said uptake of the plan had been within its expectations. He believed it was fair to charge customers a subscription fee to access the network, and said customers were willing to pay it for the simplicity of the plan.
