Vernon Parish schools can prepare students for bright futures

My father PCS'd to Fort Polk in 1986, when I was 4 years old. A year later, I began kindergarten at West Leesville Elementary. I still remember the hesitation and fear I felt in leaving home for the first time. My parents even followed behind the school bus and, every few minutes, I looked back to make sure they were still there. Once I was in class, though, I was in my element. And I had one advantage that most of my little peers did not: I already knew how to read. My mother, who raised me alone during my formative toddler years as my father served his country overseas, taught me the alphabet and how to read simple sentences using a phonics kit. She made the learning of letters fun: I wanted her to bring the phonics kit out every day. I remember that kit fondly: I felt like such a big girl, studying from the files of the box decorated with mushrooms and gnomes. During my tenure at West Leesville Elementary, I continued with Vernon Parish's set curriculum. I began to learn simple math and spelling in first and second grades, reading and grammar in third and fourth, along with music and long division. I liked West Leesville; I developed a good group of friends; the teachers were enthusiastic and knowledgeable and the playground had a gargantuan tower of monkey bars that I longed to climb, and one day did. After West Leesville Elementary, I attended Vernon Middle School for fifth and sixth grades and Leesville Junior High School for seventh and eighth. These were awkward years for me as I began to leave childhood behind. But that passion for learning had long been instilled in me and I thrived in academics. In seventh grade, I wrote my first real "research" paper on Harper Lee's To Kill a Mockingbird, using secondary sources and Modern Language Association (MLA) style that is the mainstay for any writer of papers throughout his or her academic career. Though math was not my strong suit, an excellent teacher managed to make me care about algebra.    During 10th grade, my mother heard of a boarding school for gifted students called Louisiana School for Math, Science and the Arts. She pushed me to apply, though I was happy with my group of friends and was making straight As where I was. The application consisted of lots of paperwork, transcripts, an essay and an interview with an admissions board (much like an application to college is.) To my trepidation, I was accepted. This meant I would leave home at 16 and live in a dorm, with a roommate and attend college-style classes. I was understandably hesitant, but because of my love for learning and my dreams of attending an Ivy League university, I went to LSMSA.  The first year was hard. To be thrust into a collegiate atmosphere at the tender age of 16 was a challenge, and for months I was terribly homesick. Even so, I found the atmosphere to be one in which everyone I encountered had the same passion for learning that I cherished so much in myself. This shared trait in itself created a bond. I made new friends, took classes like "Introduction to Shakespeare," where I read Richard III and Twelfth Night; "Introduction to British Literature," where my love for poetry expanded as I read poets like Marvell, Keats and Eliot; I continued taking Spanish, which I had begun at Leesville High School; I took private piano lessons, offered by the school for those pursuing a fine arts course; and I struggled through physics and trigonometry. The A- I earned at the end of the semester in trig was the hardest earned grade I'd ever received.   Towards the end of my high school career, I began to wonder which college I might attend. After living away from home for two years, I began to consider Louisiana colleges, and applied to Louisiana College, Louisiana State University, Centenary College of Shreveport and, through my love for the American poet Emily Dickinson, her alma mater, Mount Holyoke, in Massachusetts.   I was accepted everywhere I applied. Because of my high grade point average and test scores, I was offered a total scholarship to Centenary, a private liberal arts college with a stellar reputation. Having lived in small towns my entire life, I thought of Shreveport as the "big city," and just as I had been nervous to attend LSMSA, I was terrified of going to college. Some may think that a child's education begins in kindergarten, where the common curriculum includes learning the alphabet and becoming familiar with the words that form sentences. But it really begins at home, with a parent willing to work with a young mind that's thirsty not only for knowledge itself, but for the passion, the pursuit, of knowledge. Babies often point to items in a room and ask with their babyish lisps, "What's that?" and "What's that?
