In God's hands: Douglas soldier leaves for second tour of duty in Afghanistan

Ivey graduated from Douglas High School in 2007 then pursued a degree in paramedics from Wallace State.

Times were hard in finding adequate work, and after losing a job three days before his wedding in 2009, Ivey decided to make a change. He enlisted in the Army National Guard.

"It was something I had talked about for months," Ivey recalled. "I just felt like I needed something more in my life, like God was calling me to do it."

Ivey left for basic training soon after his wedding and spent six months at Fort Leonard Wood, Mo.

For the next two years, Ivey worked weekend drills and waited patiently for his call to duty.

That first call came in January of this year.

Ivey was sent to Kabul, Afghanistan, where he was assigned to help in combat support.

"I was really nervous the first time I was called out," he said. "But I was also very, very excited to go. I had been waiting to get called ever since I left basic training."

Ivey, although coming from a military family, had grown up saying he would never join the army.

"I always said I would never join but, after I went to basic training, I realized I had never been so good at something in my life," he said.

Ivey's wife, Jennifer, has been supporting her husband's military dreams from day one.

"We had talked about it a few months before the wedding. It scared me more than anything," said Jennifer. "I didn't know how our life would end up."

Realizing how happy her husband seemed about his new career, she made sure he knew she was behind him 100 percent.

"He's never been happier doing what he's doing," Jennifer recalled. "I'm going to take my role as his supportive wife and know that he's serving our country and loves what he gets to do."

Jennifer enjoyed her husband's two weeks home from active duty for R&R, but knew it was temporary.

Ivey has since suited up and will be finishing the rest of his first tour in Afghanistan, and could possibly be gone for the rest of the year.
