Sony launches NEX-7 "pro" ILC with new dSLRs

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia --This is it. Sony has finally, officially, taken the wraps off of its latest semi-professional dSLR cameras as well as expanded its line of NEX interchangeable lens cameras (ILCs). With the Japanese company being no stranger to product leaks, we were glad to see so many of the updates and changes that were expected come to fruition.


The NEX goes "pro" When Sony first announced its NEX line of ILCs in May last year , there was a lot of buzz over how the company managed to imbue an APS-C-sized sensor into a camera body that was so small. Some critics thought it was a gimmick and bemoaned the lack of direct controls. However, more than a year on--and after the launch of the NEX-C3 , which earned our Editors' Choice--we expected more from Sony's pint-sized ILCs.

The NEX-7 is the first ILC from Sony that makes a serious bid at the wallet (and hearts?) of professionals and enthusiasts who want a small form factor camera that doesn't compromise on image quality. While Micro Four Thirds cameras do have their merits, the smaller sensors in those cameras make low-light sensitivity a challenge. That's where the latest NEX cameras excel.



The first thing most of us would notice about the NEX-7 is its chunkier build. It isn't a very heavy camera though with a magnesium alloy body. The flash mount (compatible only with Sony's flash modules, obviously) is another notable addition which should make this camera appeal more to those who need the flexibility of larger flashes. There's also one that's in-built in this model, for those who weren't too fond of the fiddly HVL-F7S flash that comes bundled with the other NEX-series cameras. In addition, it's the first Sony NEX to come with a built-in electronic viewfinder, an XGA-resolution OLED one, at that.
