Arrests made in Matt Wilson AC unit thefts

Aug. 20--TIFTON -- Two more arrests have been made in connection to the theft and damage of 10 air conditioning units at Matt Wilson Elementary School on July 27-28, and all involved are being charged with 10 counts of criminal damage to property in the second degree and 10 counts of theft by taking.

According to Detective Dorminey McCrae at the Tifton Police Department, a 16-year-old juvenile was arrested Tuesday and Javier Lashun Dixon, 18, of Tifton was arrested Wednesday.

McCrae stated that due to the cooperation and assistance from the community and local metal vendors, they were able to arrest the two offenders.

McCrae explained that on Wednesday afternoon while he was out looking for a vehicle involved in a particular incident, he happened to see Dixon in the area of South Park Avenue and Griffin Street on a Moped scooter.

"He turned his head away from me and I realized that it was him," McCrae said. "I turned around at the intersection and stopped him. I asked to speak with him and called for another unit, and he was placed under arrest."

McCrae advised that Dixon was floating between Tifton and Adel, and he happened to be in Tifton on Wednesday. McCrae noted that Dixon had gotten word that the TPD was looking for him.

McCrae said the 16-year-old juvenile was arrested by the Crime Suppression Unit on Tuesday in the area of Old Omega Road. Officers Shane Benefield and Matthew Ruberson located the offender and made the arrest.

Willie James Laster IV, 23, of Tifton was arrested July 28 in connection to the case after McCrae and Detective Lee Dunston caught him with five of the 10 units in the trunk of the vehicle he was driving.

According to McCrae's report of the arrest, at approximately 10:36 a.m. July 28, he attempted to make a traffic stop on a white 2001 Buick Lasabre in reference to a traffic infraction at 17th Street and Dorminey Street. The vehicle continued to travel south on Dorminey Street and turned left on 21st Street traveling eastbound. He reported that the driver, Laster, turned into the front yard of a residence on 21st Street and opened the door of the vehicle.
