Life on the water: magic, mystery, malaise and mayhem

At daybreak on Friday morning -- about 48 hours ahead of Hurricane Irene's anticipated rude arrival - I hurried down to Ocean City, Maryland. I was a man on a mission and I had plenty of company. The 24/7 gloom-and-doom media hype surrounding this latest storm of the century - Glenn "Hurricane" Schwartz essentially reading us our last rites -- compelled me to make a last ditch effort to batten down the hatches on our waterfront property and try to haul my boat out of the water and store it at dry dock before the hurricane blew by, a proverbial race against time and mother nature. The great unknown - the ferocity of the storm and the havoc it might wreak - loomed ahead. I debated making the effort, knowing I would have to fight a historical wave of evacuating traffic on the way back. But with Irene, then a "monster" Category 3 storm, bearing down on our beach home, and officials up and down the eastern seaboard declaring states of emergency and mandatory evacuations of seaside resorts, including Ocean City, I opted to err on the side of caution, better safe than sorry, a stitch in time saves nine, choose your own apropos clichée, as my wife Patti and I hopped into the pick-up and prepared to face a very long day. Before we left, I called the folks at Harbor Marine who, although besieged by panicked pleas for assistance by a fleet of harried boat owners, promised to haul my boat out at the sure-to-be-jam-packed public ramp. We built the house, located on a canal on the West Ocean City mainland across the bay from Ocean City's barrier island, back in 1988. Of modest saltbox design, the little house afforded us all the enjoyment a waterfront home at the beach could provide. I could dock my boat right in the canal just ten yards from my back porch and fish for flounder, bluefish, croaker, sea bass, weakfish and more at the famed Thorofare just five minutes away.

Around 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, the music will start and hundreds of people are expected to “Move It Like Bernie” in front of unsuspecting shoppers. More than 1,000 people have indicated they might show up via the event’s Facebook page .

The dance will take place in the Main Plaza at the mall.

Short Pump Town Center is no stranger to flash mobs. In 2009, local church group Richmond Outreach Center started one in the Plaza as well.
