Texas Lawyer Blog: Beaumont lawyer announces candidacy for ...

Michael Truncale, a partner in Beaumont’s Orgain, Bell & Tucker, announced on Aug. 3 that he will seek the seat for redrawn Texas Congressional District 14, which includes parts of Brazoria and Harris counties and all of Galveston and Jefferson counties. U.S. Rep. Ron Paul, the Republican incumbent who lives in the district, announced in July that he would not seek re-election. Truncale says his decision to run came about suddenly after a state representative, state senator and community leaders approached him and asked him to run. “This all happened within a couple of weeks,” says Truncale, who notes he initially declined to enter the race. “I am content being a lawyer, representing people in court.” Now that he is running, when he gets to Congress he intends to address concerns he shares with Republicans and some Democrats in his district over the deficit. “We are on our way to becoming another Greece,” he says, referring to that nation’s default on its debt. Truncale -- a regent for the Texas State University System and a member of the State Republican Executive Committee -- says he will start raising money for his campaign soon. “Maybe someone has written me a check but I haven’t seen it yet,” he says. Chris Elam, a spokesman for the Republican Party of Texas, says two other Republican candidates have announced or formed an exploratory committee for the District 14 congressional seat: John Gay, a school administrator from Richmond, has announced his candidacy; and state Rep. Randy Weber from Pearland, who owns a company that sells air conditioning units, has launched an exploratory committee. When asked about Democratic candidates for the seat, Texas Democratic Party spokeswoman Kirsten Gray writes in an email that “[t]here are a number of people thinking about it, but no one has announced yet.
