Over 3000 sign books of condolence for Red Arrows pilot Jon Egging

ANOTHER 1,000 people had signed the books of condolence for Flt Lt Jon Egging in Bournemouth Town Hall by lunchtime on Monday.

They joined the 2,000 who had signed them on Sunday. All the books will be presented to his widow Emma.

Sue Bennett, 43, from West Moors , came from the town hall and said: “I wrote that we watched the display with joy feeling proud to be British and that he was so brave.”

Lt Egging, a 33-year-old veteran of Afghanistan, had flown Harriers with 4 Squadron before joining the Red Arrows.

One message read: “From a former 4 Squadron member. You gave so much pleasure and enjoyment to thousands of people and we are all thinking of you and your family.”

Another was from Andy Page and the Air Traffic Control team. Flt Lt Egging reportedly got off a mayday call before crashing west of Bournemouth Airport .

The tribute read: “A great man and an amazing pilot. Deepest sympathy to Emma and the rest of the family. You will be in our thoughts.”

More than 350 people have also left floral tributes outside and the cards are being collected each day and passed to Emma.

She said: “The tributes that have poured in both online and here in Bournemouth have just been astounding.

“It’s very heartfelt when I say thank you to everybody and I know the Red Arrows are completely bowled over by the level of support.”

More than 154,000 people had joined the most popular of numerous Facebook tribute pages by Monday afternoon.

Just to let you all know that there are now over 11000 "likes" of the page backing a memorial for Flight lieutenant Jon Egging and in recognition for all that the RAF and Red Arrows have done for Bournemouth. We would like to thank all those who have shared thoughts and photographs of the Red Arrows. We are considering a exhibition of some kind, probably at the time of next years Airshow of the photographs etc people have sent in.

Shedding Khawatir: Pet "Sympathy" Cards

My dance teacher's  husband died recently (Allah yar7amu) and the visitation was today.  I stopped to get a card at the grocery store (sadly it was also dorm move-in day, apparently, so the place was crazy).  Cards are organized by category, but I couldn't find a "death" or "funeral" section.  Hmm, what else would this be called, I wondered.  Condolences? I couldn't find that either.  Finally, I realized that since I definitely wasn't looking for a birthday, anniversary, holiday, wedding, baby, thank you, or blank card, it must be the "sympathy" section.  Granted, I am at the point in life where I go to more weddings than funerals, but this seemed a little overly euphemistic to me.  As I looked through the cards, trying in vain to find one that wasn't full of nauseatingly maudlin verse, I noticed one with paw prints on it.  I pulled it out.  It was, indeed, a sympathy card for the loss of one's pet.  In fact, there was a whole section of pet sympathy cards.  Now, I love my cats dearly, and will be beyond distraught when they die.  But a pet sympathy card? Really?
