Village Vintage Toy-Truck Enthusiast Presents Collection at Grand Avenue

Western Springs resident John Earhart, 84, presented Grand Avenue Preschool and Daycare students with a lesson on toy-car history Monday, as he brought about a dozen vintage 1920's-era pressed-steel model trucks and other vehicles for the kids to learn about and play with.

Earhart, who used to be in fire protection, began collecting the toys over 50 years ago, going to flea markets and other sales. His specialty is 1920's heavy pressed-steel toys, especially from the Buddy "L" factory that used to be in East Moline, Illinois. (After the 1920's, with the Depression and then World War II, steel was typically too precious to be used in great amounts for toys.)

“I like the trucks,” Earhart said simply. “I started with a few, and just kept adding them.”

In his presentations, which he has given to everyone from preschoolers to senior citizens, Earhart shows how the vintage toys have working, moving parts (the cement mixer actually turns, for instance) and talks about the toys' history.

“I have more fun than the kids do!" he claimed.

The Grand Avenue kids had a blast playing with the durable steel toys, riding them around the Community Center room and playing with the movable parts.

"This batch of kids was particularly good," Earhart added. "They were sharing, not fighting over [the toys.]”
