County sets budget hearing

As the severe drought conditions continue in the late summer months, Colorado County Commissioners agreed there is no choice but to continue to enforce the ongoing burn ban.

Colorado County Commissioners’ Court approved an order restricting outdoor burning pursuant to the Texas Local Government Code Sect. 352.081 (c)(2) for up to 90 days during their Aug. 22 regular meeting.

However, if the county receives a substantial rain in the foreseeable future, Commissioners can still allow the County Judge the option to lift the burn ban temporarily as was approved during a Commissioners’ Court meeting in July.

In other business, Commissioners approved to set a date for a public hearing for the 2012 proposed budget as presented for Sept. 12, beginning at 9:15 a.m. Commissioners are scheduled to also adopt the proposed 2011 tax rate of 0.48206 per $100 valuation at that time.

During announcements, County Commissioner Pct. 1 Doug Wessels said a meeting is to take place at 305 Radio Lane in Columbus at 5:30 p.m. Aug. 30 pertaining to information about insurance requirements for floodplain issues within flood zones. He said Mark Lujan, FEMA regional manager, would be in attendance to inform the public about floodplain issues and that local realtors, bank representatives, insurance agencies, and anyone else interested in the matter was invited to attend.

In other items, Commissioners:

•Established a “No Thru Trucks” zone for Ramsey Road, beginning at State Highway 90A and ending at Fm 102, Pct. 4.

•Established a speed limit of 35 miles per hour on Clipson Road, Pct. 4.

•Approved County Personnel to work and use county equipment at the Colorado County Fair Grounds during work hours.

•Approved action to wave a fee for paramedics’ blood draw if a Colorado County Justice of the Peace appears at the scene of the accident regarding Intermedix patient care directive for fatality blood draws subject to the review of Colorado County Attorney Ken Sparks.

Of course, everyone thinks their county fair is the best. And anyone who shows would probably say that aside from winning like Houston....the next show you want to win the most is your home county fair. Of course there are lots of great county fairs, but I would venture to say that in terms of junior Brahman shows, Wharton County Fair has got to be the tops. (But I might be partial ha ha). But seriously, here is why I think Wharton is the toughest. There is probably more Brahman competition at this little fair than any others in the world because of WHO shows there. For example, this year, despire small numbers, there were excellent quality Brahman cattle exhibited by my cousin Payton Powell (from V8 Ranch), Erin and Kristin Cullers (from Heritage Cattle), Logan Goudeau (from J.D. Hudgins) and Michael Joyce, Jr. (from Joyce Custom Fitters). PRETTY DEEP WATER if you ask me!!! And this steep competiton didn't just start this year...it's been going on for the nearly 30 years history of the fair. Legendary Brahman breeder Johnny Joyce was one of the founding members of this fair. I guess he set the tone for the show, because for the longest time, our fair had two breed classifications in the breeding beef show: Brahman and Non-Brahman. Oh yeah, how's that for breed domination! Through the years, there have been more international and national champions and All American champions grace the little showring at Wharton Fair than probably any other...especially when you think of everyone who has shown here as a participant at the fair...dating back to Judd Cullers as a junior showman, the Forgasons, the Kmeics, the Koonces, the Hudgins, the Goudeaus, the Joyce's, my sister and I, the Locke's, and many many more! I personally remember when I showed at the county fair in my senior year. Billie Wayne Key was the judge and you guessed it...Brahmans ruled the show!
