Rhoades Review: Does latest 'Spy Kids' pass scratch-and-sniff test?
My high school physics teacher explained the concept of three dimensions — height, width, and depth. And Twilight Zone’s Rod Serling explained that the fourth dimension is time.
However, that’s not quite true in “Spy Kids: All the Time in the World in 4D,” the fourth entry in Robert Rodriguez’s family-that-spies-together film franchise. Sure, the movie is presented in 3D. But what is its fourth dimension?
The movie posters tell us the film features Aroma-Scope. What is that, you might ask?
First, you must understand 4D in movie terms. 4D is a marketing concept that combines a 3D film with physical effects.
Such physical gimmicks were often used back in the ’60s by a B-grade horror film producer named William Castle. He was always coming up with touchy-feely stunts to promote his frightening movies. You can read all about it in his autobiography “Step Right Up! I’m Gonna Scare the Pants Off America.”
A glow-in-the-dark skeleton attached to a wire floated over the audience during the final moments of Castle’s “House on Haunted Hill.” Movie seats were equipped with vibrators for “The Tingler.”
Filmed in Illusion-O, the audience received a viewer that allowed them to spot spooks superimposed on “13 Ghosts.”
So what do you get with Aroma-Scope in “Spy Kids: All the Time in the World in 4D”?
Well, it’s kinda like the old concept of Smell-O-Vision, a system that released odors into the theater so viewers could smell what was happening on the screen. (The technique made only one appearance in “Scent of a Mystery,” a 1960 film produced by Mike Todd, Jr.)
And schlock director John Waters used a technique called Odorama with his 1981 comedy “Polyester.”
Okay, what’s the gimmick with “Spy Kids: All the Time in the World in 4D”? When you purchase your ticket you will be given a scratch-and-sniff card that you’ll use on cue throughout the movie to conjure up a series of smells.
