History center chief tabbed for state post
-->Andy Masich, newly appointed chairman of the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission, sees tourism dollars when he looks at the state's history.
"Tourism is the second-largest industry in Pennsylvania," said Masich, president and CEO of the Heinz History Center in the Strip District. "I think that the PHMC, working together with museums and historical organizations around the state, can make it even bigger."
Masich spoke Wednesday after Gov. Tom Corbett announced his appointment as chairman of the state's official history agency. The agency helps preserve, interpret and promote Pennsylvania history through the Pennsylvania State Archives, The State Museum of Pennsylvania, the State Historic Preservation Office and the Bureau of Historic Sites and Museums.
"Andy Masich brings a wealth of experience from his career in museums," Corbett said in a prepared statement. "I am confident that he will be a strong leader and an advocate for the Commission's work."
Prior to joining the history center, Masich worked for the Colorado Historical Society in Denver and the Yuma and Phoenix museums of the Arizona Historical Society. He has a master's degree in history and museum administration from the University of Arizona.
"It's good for all of us in Western Pennsylvania that he was asked to serve on this board," said Annie Urban, interim director of operations for Fort Ligonier, a nonprofit museum in Ligonier. "It brings attention to historic sites in this side of the state."
Out-of-state visitors spent $31.1 billion during their travels in Pennsylvania in 2009, the latest year for which figures are available, said Craig Davis, vice president for sales and marketing for VisitPittsburgh. A study released earlier this month found that going to a museum and historic landmark are the second- and third-most popular reasons for visiting Pittsburgh, topped only by dining at a restaurant.
"The appointment of Andy Masich suggests to me that the state is serious about cultural and heritage tourism," Davis said.

&Ldquo; This is definitely our passion, so we want to focus on that and continue to promote Yuma and keep it in the forefront,” Sheppeard added. “At the end of the day, our clients (visitors) will never know the difference. Our job has always been to promote Yuma's unique and authentic qualities, which in turn brings visitors to Yuma.” “We want a new executive director to be in place to experience the Christmas Village, the influx of the winter visitors and the extreme highs of the tourism industry, rather than start in the middle of the summer when planning takes place for the following year.
